Mt. Kazbek.

Kazbek (5047m), one of the highest and beautiful peaks of the Caucasus is situated in the eastern part the central Caucasus in Georgia. The Mount Kazbek region itself contains many summits over 4000 metres and this is one of the most important mountaineering and trekking areas in the Caucasus. Mt. Kazbek is also known as “Mkinvartsveri”- by its Georgian name. The first ascent of Kazbek was made by D. Freshfield in 1868.

From Tbilisi we drive to Kazbegi region via a beautiful Aragvi Valley and Jvari Pass (2380m). This trip takes 3,5 hours. As we get to a small town of Kazbegi (1700m) we begin our trek to Camp1 (2950m). This is a delightful trek across the alpine pastures leading us to the Gergeti Glacier. From the campsite we pass a moraine and continue our trek crossing the glacier. We reach the high mountain refuge-Meteostation (3675m), situated on the south slopes of Mount Kazbek. We allow a day for acclimatisation exploring the area and trek up to 4500m to the Maili Plateau.

For the ascent of Mount Kazbek we set off in the early hours. The route leads us to the Maili Plateau (4500m), where we will use crampons. As we climb NW snow icy summit slopes to the saddle (4900m.), it will be necessary to fix a rope on the final section and travellers can easily reach the summit, 5047m, which will award us with spectacular views of the Caucasian peaks. We descend to the meteostation in the evening. We finish our expedition by walking down to Kazbegi and drive to Tbilisi.
The trip enables us to visit the main sites of Tbilisi.
This is a unique climbing holiday, which has proved to be a great success!

Trip Grade
In spite of its technical ease, Kazbek is a serious mountain. On a scale of 1-5, the grading of Mt. Kazbek equals to 2. Although no advance mountaineering experience is required for the ascent of Kazbek, you will need to be familiar with the basic use of crampons and ice axes and you should be in good physical condition. We have only a few days for acclimatization before we ascent the summit. We do not make any rock climbing, although the final sections of the mountain will be climbed on icy slopes at about 35-40 degrees, which we will fix.
