The object of the Association is to foster throughout Georgia fundamental scientific research contributing to an understanding of the nervous system, of higher brain functions, biological basis of behavior and its disorders.
However, because of the continuing social, political and economic upheaval in Georgia as a result of the disintegration of the Soviet Union and subsequent economic depression in the new independent states, government funding for basic science in Georgia has declined dramatically. Researchers have a very low salary and they are obliged to look for the other jobs. In past years there have been reductions in academic and research positions, especially in research institutes. For this reason we consider it very important to maintain and develop our research base in neuroscience despite political and economic problems in our country. Change and improve the level of teaching neuroscience in the universities and especially in the medical colleges, by creating an education system that is competitive at an international level. We must also improve the scientific standard and productivity of research, perhaps by making a system of open competition for research grants and judged by groups of experts from abroad. It is necessity some means of sending young, creative fellows to leading laboratories in Western Europe and the USA for a period of time. At present, several scientists from Georgia successfully works abroad, Dr T.Gloveli, Dr.N.Doreuli and T.Chelidze in German, Dr. M.Kokaia, Dr. Z.Kokaia, A.Nanobashvili and Sh.Janelidze in Sweden, Dr. G.Gegelashvili in Denmark, Drs. D.Lominadze, Z.Mchedlishvili, G.Gamkrelidze and N.Trapaidze in the USA. At the same time it very important financial support of Georgian skilled researchers by "Against Brain-Drain" programs and collaboration with foreign colleagues in mutual research projects.
In these difficult times we seek international solidarity and practical support to fulfill our aims to overcome the problems and raise neuroscience research in Georgia to a higher level. The Board Georgian Neuroscience Association will endeavor to expand the development of brain research, increase the Associations activities in the coming years, and intensify collaboration with IBRO, FENS and neuroscience societies in the other countries.
