ABOUT US

On 14.05.1999 non governmental organization "Georgian Union of Mountain Activists" was created, which unites scientists, public figures, experts of various branches, well-known representatives of mountain sports. The purpose of the union is: to identify the of problems of mountain areas of Georgia and find constructive ways of their decision; to involve actively wide layers of Georgian society in the international process of rescue of mountains.
The Union has the regional organizations in Bakuriani and Kazbegi and plans to create more branches in other mountain regions of Georgia.

The socio-economic development of the high-mountainous areas of Georgia lags behind its lowland. Recent political changes and natural disasters (earthquakes, landslides etc.) had aggravated economic, social and demographic conditions of high-mountainous areas of Georgia even more. Today mountain areas of Georgia are exploited mercilessly: the woods are cut down, many unique representatives of flora and fauna are set on the verge of annihilation, natural disaster periodicity has increased considerably, the ecological balance is broken. Depressed demographic situation in mountains is fraught with disappearance of unique ethnic cultures. Many mountain areas of Georgia have become empty, the local population abandons mountains, historical villages have turned to ruins. Unfortunately, the process of economic and demographic degradation of high-mountainous areas goes more and more deep.

The program of action of "Georgian Union of Mountain Activists" envisages:

Assistance to socio-economic development of mountain areas of Georgia; with this purpose the Union will participate constantly in perfection of the legislation of mountains and in its implementation
Assistance to recreational development of mountain areas of Georgia, its propagation and popularization
Protection of the nature, introduction of ecologically safe culture of nature exploitation
Realization of competitions, travels, educational entertainment with the aim to help the sustainable development of mountains
Among its prior activities the Union considers participation in the elaboration of "Caucasian convention", aimed to establish legal interactions in the frontier mountain areas of Caucasus.

The rescue, preservation and protection of unique mountain areas of Caucasus, their natural environment, rich mineral and recreational resources, ethnographic variety are the problems that concern not only Caucasian peoples! By its global meaning it must be considered as the universal problem and for this reason requires support and help of worldwide public.

The Union is ready to cooperate, in any form acceptable to them, with all organizations and persons, which are concerned with these problems
