Association
“Stages” is a Georgian non-profit, non-governmental (NGO) humanitarian
organization officially registered in March of 1998. Our mission is to help the vulnerable, disabled, and
underprivileged. Since our
foundation we have voluntarily assisted those facing problems of extreme poverty
and homelessness. We are dedicated
to improving the quality of life of these socially unprotected groups. Our
organization was officially registered in 1998, however our roots began much
earlier. In 1992 war broke out in
the Georgian region of Abkhasia. At
that time our program founders were teenagers with the desire to help the
refugees who fled to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.
Many of these people were wounded and disabled.
During
this period of social crisis many of our fellow countrymen suddenly found
themselves below the poverty line. With
our own means and the assistance of our families and friends we formed an
alliance to care for those in need. We
began by helping in hospitals, delivering food and medicines to those in the
street, caring for old people who were alone in their flats, and providing
clothing to those in need. Gradually
the amount of people we were assisting expanded and it became impossible for us
to help them with our own means. Thus
in 1998 our group decided to register and establish an official organization
with the goal of finding donors who could assist by extending humanitarian help
to others. Our
organizational focus is directed toward the assistance of three distinct
populations: ·
Children living in the Martkopi
Orphanage ·
Infants hospitalized in the
Tbilisi Infant’s Hospital #2 or living in the Tbilisi Infant’s orphanage. ·
Adults, children, and the elderly
who are homeless, handicap, or facing extreme poverty. Every
country in the world takes care of their poor and needy.
In Georgia, it is needless to say that due to the current conditions, our
country’s state budget is not able to meet all or even part of the basic needs
many members of society. Socially
unprotected groups such as orphans, the elderly, the homeless, the handicap, and
the extremely poor are often the most distressed and forgotten.
Our organization as a NGO aims at cooperating with the government to
provide assistance to those who have no other alternative but to depend on
others for their care. The
following website is an introduction to our organization and our individual work
with these focus groups. We hope to
enlist your support as we strive to assist those in need. Contact us on: Tel/Fax:
